Instrument Training 

The Instrument Rating builds upon your foundational flying skills by teaching you how to safely and confidently operate an aircraft in a wider range of weather conditions using advanced navigation systems and instrument procedures. Training focuses on precision flying, IFR communication, approach procedures, weather interpretation, and situational awareness, preparing pilots for more complex and professional flight operations. Whether you are pursuing a career in aviation or simply looking to become a safer, more capable pilot, the Instrument Rating is one of the most valuable and rewarding advancements in flight training.

  • Age: Minimum of 17 years old to earn the certificate. 
  • Medical: Hold at least a third-class FAA medical certificate.
  • Prerequisites: Minimum of 50 hrs cross country PIC
  • Knowledge: Pass the FAA Written Knowledge Test.
  • Practical: Pass an oral and flight examination (Checkride).
  • Language: Be proficient in reading, speaking, and understanding English.

* Amount of dual flight instruction and/or ground instruction hours required is variable depending upon self-study, preparedness, and instruction evaluation.

** 50 hrs. of PIC cross-country (XC) time are required for an instrument rating, usually students will do about 20 hrs. of that with an instructor and 30 hrs. solo or with a buddy. The amount of PIC XC time building will vary depending on how many hours you still need to gain.
